4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket from 14-23 November 2014

Thailand has been honoured by the Olympic Council of Asia to host the 4th Asian Beach Games during 14-23 November 2014 in Phuket, one of the kingdom's best known beach destinations in the Andaman Sea. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will be co-hosting this international sporting event, which will take place at Phuket's famous beaches of Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Yang, as well as Bangneow Dam, Chaofa Mine and Saphan Hin Sports Centre.

TAT Governor, Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik said, "Being selected as the host country of the Asian Beach Games 2014 is a good opportunity for Thailand, especially for Phuket, to show to the world that our tourism and sporting facilities are of an international standard. The event will definitely show that apart from being a famous beach destination in Asia, Phuket also has the potential to be the region's leading sports destination."

The Asian Beach Games 2014 will be held under the slogan: "Celebrate Charming Sunshine" with the logo of the competition featuring two sugar palm trees, the symbol of Laem Phrom Thep, one of the famous viewpoints in Phuket. The wording "4th Asian Beach Games" will sit between the two palm trees, signifying the sport athletes of Asia who are joining the competition in the place which is full of friendship. There will also be three cartoon characters (mascots) of sea turtles named Sintu, Samut and Sakorn to be used as the symbol of luck.

It is anticipated that more than 3,500 athletes and officers from 45 countries in Asia will be joining the game, which will feature 19 types of sports competitions; such as, beach volleyball, beach basketball, sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, jet-ski, water ski, triathlon, beach soccer, and beach athletics.

TAT launches Yours Connect

BANGKOK, 10 November 2014: The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched "Yours Connect", a new app that will help visitors explore travel opportunities Thailand with just a couple of taps on the screens of their mobile device.

The app was developed by a working group from V Build and Operate Ltd and Golmex Media (Thailand) Ltd, digital publishing magazine and media businesses.

Your acts like a personal tour guide with dozens of recommended places stored inside including great restaurants, accommodation, shops, and tourist spots.

Visitors can design and plan their routes to get access to all activities going on anywhere and search for new places.

Tourism Authority of Thailand deputy governor for policy and planning, Santi Chudinthra, said: "The'Yours' app is TAT's first personalised E-Travel magazine. It is the first app under the "TAT: Yours Connect" digital media project that will be targeted at all visitors using mobile devices."

In recent years, TAT has developed online and digital marketing strategies to promote tourism via new media and across all devices; such as, mobile phones, smartphones and tablets. These have been designed to reach specific target audiences worldwide, especially young travellers and families.

Thailand tops for low costs

BANGKOK, 12 November 2014: Thailand ranked seventh on a list of top destinations for affordable quality living, according to the HSBC Expat Explorer 2014 survey that monitors destination preferences.

The top 10 destinations for expatriates listed Switzerland in the number one spot, followed by Singapore, China, Germany, Bahrain, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, India and Hong Kong.

Based solely on expenses, Thailand was the top destination for cost-effective quality living, followed by Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Bahrain, India, Turkey, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor, Thawatchai Arunyik said: "This is great news, and it is very encouraging to see that expats have high regard for Thailand, especially in terms of cost-effective quality living. It is also very encouraging that Thailand receives a nod of approval from expats to give it a ranking in the 10 top destinations."

According to the HSBC Expat Explorer 2014, Thailand emerges as the best destination for expats looking for an improved lifestyle at an affordable cost.

The report said: "This greater level of disposable income can be attributed to the high proportion of expats who say they spend less on utilities (71% compared to a global average of 26%), on accommodation (70% compared to a global average of 23%), on public transport (69% compared to a global average of 35%) and on groceries (66% compared to 22% globally)."

For travelling experiences, over two-thirds of expats said they travelled more since moving to Thailand, taking advantage of destinations across the country and Bangkok's position as a gateway to the rest of Asia.

Cool weather a hot topic for travel

BANGKOK, 13 November 2014: Kasikorn Research Centre estimates tourism revenue circulating in Thailand's north and northeast regions, October to December, this year, will reach THB48,500 million increasing 11.24% from THB43,600 million over the same period last year.

The bank think-tank unit said Thai tourists will flock to the north and northeast to experience cool weather with Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces drawing the most visitors.

The expansion of low-cost airlines is the main driver pushing the expansion of domestic tourism.

In addition, the government approved a five-day holiday for the New Year festival from 31 December 2014 to 4 January 2015 and has added the incentive of a tax rebate on travel expenses that citizens can gain when filing their annual tax declarations.

Under the scheme, businesses and private individuals will be eligible for tax deductions on expenses until 31 December next year.

Individuals who buy local package tours, or hotel accommodation, will be able to list the purchases as deductible expenses against their taxable income for the year. The deductible amount is set at no more than THB15,000.

Companies will also be able to use the tax rebate for residential training programmes for employees.

The centre estimates Thai tourists travel to the north and northest of Thailand will reach 15.7 million visits and generate THB48,500 million in revenue in Q4.

Breakdown by region

The bank estimates that Thai travellers will reach 7.20 million visits (+10.8%) to the north and genenate THB33,000 million (+11.5%). Of the revenue, THB16,700 million will be spent in Chiang Mai and THB16,300 million in other northern provinces.

Meanwhile, Thai tourist trips to the northeast region should reach 8.50 million (+9.77%) and circulate THB15,500 million in tourism revenue (+10.7%). Of that income, THB2,700 million will circulate in Nakhon Ratchasima, THB2,500 million in Khon Kaen, THB2,000 million in Udon Thani, and THB1,500 million in Ubon Ratchathani and THB6,800 million in other destinations.
